The chickens are here, the chickens are here!!

Yesterday our neighbor (who we bought this house from) brought down 14 chickens to keep in our barn. He is taking care of them, feeding them, we just get to watch them and get fresh eggs. In 1 day, they laid 11 eggs. What the heck are we going to do with that many eggs already? HA HA They are Rhode Island Reds and the males can be very aggressive so I went into their cage real quick and took some photos. One of the hens laid one while we were in there. Nicholas is insisting on naming them all so that will be interesting when they all look alike to me!! Wish us luck! :)

Sherri, i think your next blog contest could be for recipes that use a lot of eggs!!
I'll send you impossible quiche and chocolate beetroot cake- that's 8 eggs gone if you make both. they look like they will keep Nicholas amused- and busy too

Have fun with the chickens, just wait until you see all the different colored eggs they lay. I just got a dozen from a lady and they are all different, kind of like easter eggs without all the work. Can you move the photobucket show to the left side so you can see all of the pictures? I can only see half of the words so I am sure I am missing some of the picture too.

oh yeah, they say you aren't supposed to name chickens because eventually you eat them and once you name them then they are your pets. Who wants to eat something that you know was once your pet HAHAHA. Hope Nicholas doesn't get too attached!

So you are chicken sitting? How about angel food cake, deviled eggs, meringue, quiche and lots of omelets. Be careful around them. I got pecked in the foot when I was a kid and it broke the skin.

I hope you're not a late riser. I heard that chickens get up at dawn and get YOU up too. Why does the owner want y'all to house them? Don't they want some of the eggs too?? I've never eaten a fresh egg, kinda creeps me out. I know, I'm a city girl through & through: eggs, meat, milk products must come from the store!

what are the fresh eggs like? I want to know all about this. I LOVE chickens. We had some in the education part of the zoo and you could pick them up, can you pick yours up? You should cuddle them. The ones at the zoo did NOT stink but I hear they stink. Ours were fancy african something or other chickens, but they looked pretty normal to me. They did not lay eggs.

Well, let's see. I haven't eaten a fresh egg yet but I plan to cook some tomorrow so I will let you know. They come out brown and aren't goopy or anything. They are dry and warm after they are laid. We cannot pick ours up and I would not even attempt it. They run from us when we go in their pen so I would say they are more afraid of us than we are of them. Of course, if I am in the cage and they start coming after me you can bet you will be hearing me scream all the way to Jax!! hee hee
